As the 24th episode of season 1 of Friends, The One Where Rachel Finds Out makes it clear to everyone in the gang how Ross feels about Rachel. It's Rachel's birthday and the gang gets together to celebrate, except for Ross, who has to travel to China for the museum. He arrives at Monica's place to drop off a birthday gift for Rachel. The guys talk out on the balcony about the whole situation between him and Rachel. Chandler suggests that Ross forget about her since she's never going to return the sentiment. He reluctantly agrees that it's a good idea and leaves for the airport. While Rachel opens gifts, she comes across Ross' present to her. It was a brooch they saw that was just like one that belonged to her grandmother. Chandler let it slip that the last time Ross bought someone a sentimental gift like that was when he fell in love with Carol, his lesbian ex-wife. She realizes that Ross is in love with her, so she goes off to the airport to see if she can catch up with him. But she gets there as he's boarding the plane and doesn't get to tell him how she feels.

Days later, Rachel is on a date with a guy and they're out on her balcony. He goes rambling on about something, so she day dreams about Ross, who appears at her side. He gets to talking about how she can't stop thinking about him and that he's the one that she's supposed to be with. Rachel realizes this and leaves to go meet Ross at the airport, leaving her date with Monica for the night. At the airport, she awaits Ross' return, with flowers in hand. Little does she realize though, that Ross is coming back with another woman...
